The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole has partnered with a local fashion and sustainability group to offer Sew-In workshops for members of the public.

The shopping centre hosted its first Sew-In on Friday June 1 and the next session will take place on Saturday June 9 in the Eco Hub from 10am-3pm.

Facilitated by Jacqueline Engel, the sewing workshops aim to encourage the craft of making clothes and provide those interested with a space in which they can work together on creative projects. Jacqueline, who studied at the London College of Fashion, will be on hand to offer advice on projects and discuss the ethical issues the fashion industry is currently facing.

John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: “We’re pleased to welcome Jacqueline to the Eco Hub for these sewing workshops. It’s an ideal group activity for those interested in sewing and other hand-crafting skills.”

Participants need to register their interest for the next Sew-In via www.meetup.com/Fashion-Sustainability-Bournemouth and bring their own machines to the workshop. Beginners are welcome and spaces are limited.

Jacqueline Engel, facilitator of MeetUp group ‘Fashion & Sustainability, Bournemouth,’ commented: “Sewing together can be a real encouragement to finish a project you’ve been stuck on a while, or to dust off that machine that’s been waiting in the corner for months. The workshop will also include some discussion about sustainability in relation to fashion.”

The Eco Hub is the shopping centre’s creative space which supports community projects and aims to encourage sustainability.

John Grinnell added: “The Eco Hub is a great opportunity for people to use the dedicated in-centre space for workshops and exhibitions. We encourage other project leaders to get in touch with us to find out more about using the free community space.”

The Eco Hub launched earlier this year as part of the Dolphin’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and is located in the lower mall of the centre. It is open during the centre’s regular opening hours and is free to use. Email [email protected] with any booking enquiries.
