A woman from Bournemouth remains in police custody after detectives investigating the death of a man in Southampton were granted additional time to question her on suspicion of murder.
Police were called at around 4.21am on Sunday following reports that a man had been assaulted at an address in Weston Lane, Southampton.
Officers attended the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
A 23-year-old woman from Bournemouth, Dorset, and a 54-year-old man from Southampton were arrested nearby on suspicion of murder, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
The 54-year-old man was subsequently released from police custody with no further action being taken.
The woman, however, remains in custody while detectives continue their investigation. Police have been granted a 36-hour warrant of further detention, allowing officers additional time to question her.
Officers have remained at the scene as enquiries continue, with detectives working to establish exactly what happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Robert Harrington said his thoughts were with the man who died and his family.
He said specially trained officers were continuing to provide support to the family during what he described as an “extremely sad and difficult time”.
Police have also acknowledged that the incident is likely to have caused concern among residents in the local community.
Detective Chief Inspector Harrington said he understood the concerns but hoped the swift arrests made following the incident would provide some reassurance.
Anyone who may have information about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death is being urged to contact Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Police have also encouraged anyone living locally who has concerns or questions about the investigation to speak directly with officers.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and has not been charged with an offence. Being arrested or detained on suspicion of murder does not mean that a person has been found guilty, and detectives will continue to investigate the circumstances before any charging decision is made.
