Homeowners who have been affected by flooding in Bournemouth are now able to apply for up to £5,000 towards putting in measures to make their properties more resilient to the effects of flooding in the future.

The Repair and Renew Grant has been launched today (1 April 2014) and is part of the Government funding schemes to support those who have been affected by flooding between 1 December 2013 and 31 March 2014.

Charitable organisations and businesses are also eligible to claim where day to day business was affected by flooding of their premises during the same period. While like for like repairs should be covered by insurance, this particular grant is to fund measures that will make properties more resilient to the effects of flooding in the future.

The grant application form sets out what measures are eligible, and includes works such as altering floors and moving electrics, waterproofing external walls and installing a garage or driveway barrier.

The scheme allows homeowners to join together collaboratively to apply for funding for measures which may be more suitable for a number of properties, with each property eligible for up to £5,000 each.

Bournemouth Borough Council will be administering claims for those Bournemouth residents and businesses who were affected and the deadline for applications is 30 June 2014.

Tony Williams, Chief Executive at Bournemouth Borough Council, said:

“For many of our residents, the recent flooding had devastating effects on their homes and their businesses. We’re keen to help local people get back on their feet as soon as possible after the flooding and build a more resilient defence against future flooding in Bournemouth. We would encourage anyone who was flooded to take a look at the guidance and apply for the grant if they think they qualify. Our council officers are on hand to help with any questions residents have and to support them through the process.”
