77-Year-Old in Custody Following “Sickening” Racist Attack on Infant

The city of Worcester has been shamed by a despicable act of hatred that has left a local family traumatised and the wider community reeling. In what police are treating as a racially aggravated attack, a one-year-old baby and his father were assaulted outside their own home in Ronkswood, an event so shocking it challenges the very notion of decency.

According to West Mercia Police, the pair were not only subjected to vile racial abuse and “threats to kill” but were also sprayed with an unknown substance. The image of a defenceless infant, his eyes red and puffy, requiring hospital treatment with dye to assess the damage, is one that should sicken every right-thinking person. This was not a mere disagreement; it was a calculated act of cruelty targeting a family for who they are.

The details that have emerged are harrowing. The child’s mother, too fearful to be named, spoke of being “distraught and shocked,” a natural response for any parent whose sense of security has been so violently shattered. The father described a scene of chaos and terror, “like out of a film,” with children screaming and bikes falling. This is the reality of hate crime—it doesn’t just cause physical injury; it inflicts deep, lasting psychological wounds and rips at the fabric of our community.

That a 77-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault, racially aggravated public order and threats to kill adds a particularly disturbing dimension to this crime. It is a stark and unsettling reminder that virulent prejudice knows no age limit. The allegations, if proven, depict a depth of malice that is utterly abhorrent.

While the ambulance service has confirmed the child’s injuries are not believed to be serious, this in no way minimises the gravity of the offence. An attack on a baby is an attack on the most vulnerable in our society, and to compound this with racial hatred marks it as an especially insidious act. The fact that this occurred outside the family’s home, a place that should be a sanctuary, makes the violation all the more profound.

This incident must be met with the strongest possible condemnation. It is an affront to the values of tolerance and respect that the vast majority in Worcester and across the country hold dear. Our solidarity must be with the victimised family, who deserve not only justice but the full support of their community as they recover from this ordeal.

The police have rightly made an arrest and are conducting ongoing enquiries. It is imperative that justice is served swiftly and decisively. Furthermore, this event must serve as a catalyst for renewed vigilance. Complacency in the face of such bigotry is not an option. We must all actively challenge hatred wherever it appears, lest we allow such a vile stain to spread. Worcester is better than this, and it is only by standing united against racism and intolerance that we can prove it.
