An 89-year-old care home resident in Poole has rekindled her cherished memories of being a Girl Guide by rejoining the club.

Thanks to the efforts of the team at Care UK’s The Potteries, on York Road, and her daughter, Cathy, Sheila La Riviere’s wish to don the Girl Guide uniform once more was fulfilled.

Sheila’s journey with the Girl Guides began just after World War II, when she became a Brownie. She later joined the Kenton Girl Guides at the age of 11 in 1946, following in the footsteps of her mother who joined in 1912. It was here that Sheila developed a lifelong passion for the organisation, which was passed down through the generations, with Sheila’s daughter, Cathy, also later becoming a member.

Throughout her involvement, Sheila’s favourite roles were preparing food and singing around the campfire with her friends. After graduating the Guides, Sheila served as a volunteer, fulfilling the roles of both district and division commissioner. Her outstanding commitment to the Girl Guides was even recognised by being awarded the prestigious Dorset Gentian award for the longest-standing volunteer – totalling 20 years!

In an uplifting ceremony organised by The Potteries team, Sheila put on her Girl Guide uniform once again and joined the Broadstone Girl Guides and her daughter on an exciting crabbing trip to Poole Quay. The event was a nostalgic return to her roots, filled with laughter and cherished memories.

Commenting on the day, Sheila said: “It was amazing to be able to go back and be part of something I love so dearly and have very fond memories of.”

Zita Turner, Home Manager at The Potteries added: “We are proud to celebrate Sheila’s legacy and passion for the Girl Guides, which spans three generations of her family. This surprise day out for Sheila highlights our commitment to fulfilling the wishes and dreams of residents, ensuring they continue to enjoy their past interests and enjoy new memorable experiences.

“At The Potteries, we believe that celebrating these significant moments enriches the lives of our residents and keeps their past passions alive. We look forward to continuing the wishing tree initiative and bringing more smiles to the faces of the residents and their families.”
