Jeffrey Epstein and Peter Mandelson ‘were close’

Newly released court documents have revealed the extent of former Labour business secretary Peter Mandelson’s association with disgraced businessman Jeffrey Epstein, even after Epstein’s conviction for soliciting an underage girl for prostitution.

The documents, an internal report from JP Morgan bank, were filed in a New York court in 2019. The report, which outlines the bank’s 15-year relationship with Epstein, indicates that he had a close connection not only with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, but also with Lord Peter Mandelson, a prominent member of the British government.

Epstein, who received an 18-month sentence in 2008 for his involvement with an underage girl, communicated with his private banker, Jes Staley, in June 2009 regarding Mandelson. In the message, Epstein suggested arranging a meeting with Mandelson at a specific location. At the time, Mandelson held the position of business secretary in the government led by Gordon Brown.

The report also mentions an email from Mandelson, sent in March 2010 when he was still business secretary, discussing certain issues with Epstein. The content of the email indicates that Mandelson sought information on US regulations following the financial crisis.

Additionally, the report cites two instances in November 2010 and January 2011 when Epstein claimed to be in the company of someone referred to as “Petie.” JP Morgan interpreted this as a possible reference to Mandelson, although by that time, Mandelson was no longer part of the government.

A spokesperson for Mandelson expressed his regret at being introduced to Epstein, emphasising that there was never any professional or business relationship between them. Mandelson also stated that he has no recollection or evidence of staying at Epstein’s New York residence in 2009.

It appears that Mandelson was introduced to Epstein through Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of Robert Maxwell, a prominent tycoon. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the US for her involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking of underage girls.

The report’s findings also raise doubts about Prince Andrew’s claim to have severed ties with Epstein in December 2010. Despite the Duke of York’s assertion that his December 2010 visit to New York was intended to end their association, the report reveals that in February 2011, Epstein contacted Staley to inquire about Staley’s London schedule at Andrew’s request.

In a separate development, the Duke of York reached a settlement in 2022 in a sexual assault lawsuit brought against him by Virginia Giuffre, a victim introduced to him through Epstein and Maxwell. The terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, and the duke did not admit liability.

Epstein, who faced charges of sex trafficking a minor and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking in 2019, denied the allegations but was denied bail. He died in custody several months later in an apparent suicide.

JP Morgan commissioned the report to investigate the bank’s association with Epstein, which persisted until 2013.
