Amber de Botton, the Director of Communications for Rishi Sunak, has stepped down from her position, marking her departure less than a year into the role, just as a general election looms on the horizon.
De Botton, with an illustrious ten-year career as a broadcast journalist at ITV and Sky News, was handpicked by the Prime Minister to serve as his chief communications strategist shortly after his arrival at Downing Street. In her role as a special adviser, she provided political counsel to ministers, defended government initiatives, and critiqued opposition parties.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, De Botton expressed her gratitude, stating, “Serving as the Prime Minister’s Director of Communications has been a tremendous honor and privilege. However, I have come to the decision that it’s the right time for me to move on. I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Prime Minister for his unwavering support and strong leadership. The team he has assembled is marked by their dedication and focus, qualities that he consistently inspires. I also want to express my appreciation to my colleagues; No 10 demands rigorous and high-pressure work, yet their professionalism and exceptional talent shine through every day.”
Before her stint as Director of Communications, De Botton served as the Deputy Head of Politics at Sky News for five years until 2017. She later joined ITV News, initially as Head of Politics and subsequently as the network’s Head of News.
De Botton’s resignation follows closely on the heels of a minor reshuffle carried out by Mr. Sunak, in which Grant Shapps assumed the role of Defense Secretary, succeeding Ben Wallace, who had resigned. Additionally, the reshuffle saw Claire Coutinho’s promotion to Energy Secretary, filling Mr. Shapps’ former position.
With the next general election widely anticipated for the upcoming autumn, the government’s latest possible date to hold it is January 2025.
