Many police forces in the UK are known for exercising some leniency when it comes to speeding penalties. While exceeding the speed limit is technically an offense, drivers typically need to exceed the limit by about 10 percent plus 2mph or 3mph to trigger a speed camera. However, there are some Members of Parliament (MPs) who advocate for eliminating these allowances.

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling & Walking is set to release its Road Justice Inquiry today, proposing that fines should be strictly enforced without any tolerance for speeding, as reported by The Times.

The group expressed the following stance:

“If the prevailing assumption is that one can exceed the speed limit (to some extent) without consequences, it encourages a belief that traffic laws need not be taken seriously.

“We firmly believe that speed limits and their enforcement are the cornerstone of road justice because speeding constitutes the majority of offenses committed on the roads.”

Eliminating these tolerances would likely lead to a significant surge in the issuance of fines by police forces throughout the UK. For instance, when the Metropolitan Police reduced their tolerances from 10 percent plus 3mph to 10 percent plus 2mph in 2019, there was a substantial 259 percent increase in the number of speeding fines issued.

It’s important to emphasize that these are currently just proposals, and the government is not bound to adopt them. In the past, calls to abolish these tolerances have been made by different groups and individuals, but no changes have been implemented as a result.
