On Saturday 4 November, as part of the National Day of Action for Palestine, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Dorset Stop the War Coalition are calling a solidarity vigil in Dorchester at 12 p.m. at Town Pump, on top of South Street.
Over the past 19 days, from October 7 to 25, at least 7,028 people, including 2,913 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza. Hospitals, UNWRA shelters, residential blocks, schools and mosques have been targeted and bombed. Water supplies, food, electricity and fuel have been cut off to the civilian population. These are war crimes.
Increasingly Israeli politicians talk of driving the Palestinian population out of Gaza and into Egypt. Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have been subjected to increasing deadly attacks by the Israeli Defence Force and by armed settlers.
The violence has to end. This can only be brought about when the root cause is addressed. This lies in a system of Israeli apartheid, as identified by Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and the respected Israeli human rights NGO, B’Tselem.
Shamefully, the UK government, the EU and the US have endorsed the attacks on civilians in the name of war on Hamas. Labour leader Keir Starmer has also refused to call for a ceasefire.
Across the world, a mass protest movement has erupted. On 28 October, half a million people protested in London, calling for a ceasefire and an end to Israeli apartheid. On 4 November, protests will take place across Britain, calling for an end to attacks on Gaza. In Dorset, we shall join them, with local speakers and a minute’s silence for the victims.
