This year, as reported by The Guardian, the popular social challenge known as “Whamageddon” has resurfaced, drawing in participants once more.
The challenge revolves around avoiding the 1984 song “Last Christmas” by the band Wham! before the arrival of Christmas. Participants must steer clear of encountering this tune while engaging in various activities such as shopping, carpooling, or even visiting family, as the song could unexpectedly play on the radio.
Outlined on the challenge website are the specific rules:
- The primary rule is to avoid hearing “Last Christmas” for as long as possible.
- The game operates from December 1st to the 24th, adhering to the participant’s local time zone.
- Only the original version of the song applies to the challenge; remixes and covers remain fair game.
- Hearing the song leads to elimination from the challenge. Bonus Rule: Disqualified participants are encouraged to share their elimination on social media using #whamageddon.
Additionally, while players can strategically send the song to friends to sabotage them, the essence of the challenge is survival, not a competitive battle among participants.
Originally sprouting from online forums around 2010, the challenge gained traction after a dedicated Facebook page emerged in 2016.
Although the focus remains on dodging the Wham! Christmas classic, the challenge can be adapted to evade other holiday tunes such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” or Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time,” considered equally challenging to avoid during the festive season.
