International Dog Day celebrates the special bond between humans and dogs. Dog enthusiasts and pet owners come together to raise awareness about the needs of dogs, share knowledge on how to care for them, and celebrate the joy and companionship they bring into their lives.

The UK is a nation of dog lovers. Whether it’s the joyful expressions on their faces when their owners return home from work or the unconditional love they provide, dogs truly are man’s best friend. However, many owners may not realise that owning a dog brings a number of benefits, which have a positive impact on mental and physical well-being.

“International Dog Day honours the special friendship between humans and their dogs, which goes beyond companionship. Living with a dog does wonders for our mental and physical health” says Simon Bennett, Managing Director at petGuard.

International Dog Day falls onto Monday 26th of August this year. To celebrate this day, leading pet insurer petGuard explores the benefits of owning a dog:

Dogs help keep owners active

One of the biggest reasons why people decide to get a dog is to get a little more exercise in the daily lives. Exercise is great for both physical and mental wellbeing, but sometimes people find it difficult motivating themselves to get outside for a walk.

All dogs need some form of regular exercise – and young pups need significantly more. Heading out for a good walk or even spending time playing with a dog will contribute towards not only their physical development, but their owner’s too.

Dogs can help owners meet new people

Another great benefit to owning a dog is the boost it can have on one’s social life. Dog owners will quickly get to know a few familiar faces when they are out for a walk, and they might even make a few friends.

Many young dogs love socialising, and it gives the owners something to chat about when their dogs are getting to know each other. Dogs are always a great conversation topic!

Dogs can help prevent loneliness

Not only can dogs help owners to meet new people, but they’re great companions in general. For most people, their dogs are their best friends and it’s impossible to feel lonely when their dogs are by their side.

“Whether it’s encouraging us to remain active, helping us connect with others, or simply being there to improve our moods, dogs truly are priceless companions” adds Bennett.
