DJ PROPERTY established in 1963 are celebrating 50 years in business this Summer and are marking the occasion by launching a competition to design the “DAVID JONES MEMORIAL” with Weymouth College Stonemasonry students. The Memorial, in memory of the founder of DJ Property, David Jones, will be sited at Link Park, Weymouth’s newest business park.
Mickey Jones, one of his three sons and Chief Executive of DJ Property, said this is a very special year for the family business. Mickey commented: “Dad was instrumental in the development of the Granby Industrial Estate and probably the main reason why today it is the leading employment site in South Dorset. For decades he promoted the Estate and the businesses based on it, with great success. The Granby is now the first choice of most businesses looking for premises in South Dorset. I have been looking forward to including a memorial to Dad’s business achievements at our newest development, Link Park, and it is fitting that this memorial will be completed in DJ Property’s 50th year of business.”
He added: “I really wanted to involve the skills of the students at Weymouth College, and the competition brief was to use materials that played a part in Dad’s life such as Portland stone and steel.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the winning student to have their design seen by the thousands of people who pass the site on the Chickerell Link Road every day. The Memorial will be located in the gardens at the entrance to Link Park. My father spent his early years on Portland, and from quite humble beginnings, worked hard to build DJ Property into the largest provider of commercial property in South Dorset. DJ Property remains a very successful family business and we work hard to continue to invest in the local economy and its people.”
The competition will be judged on Wednesday 17th April at the Dorset Skills Centre at Poundbury. The judging panel will include- : Mickey Jones, Chief Executive of DJ Property, Rex Witts of Weymouth College, Kate Jones, wife of the late David Jones and Richard Paisley of Paisley Plant Hire, Portland.
Rex Witts, Director of Construction and Engineering at Weymouth College said “This is another fabulous opportunity for our world class stonemasonry department. Not only does this give our students the experience of designing and working on ‘real’ work it also creates a legacy for future generations to demonstrate the strong links between the college and the community. The stonemasonry department students will work on the design and then create the memorial in a very short space of time. This will add another really important employment skill to the project for the benefit of the students”
