As part of Bridport Open Studios over the Bank Holiday weekend 24th-26th August, the Chapel in the Garden plays host to five artists exhibiting an exciting and original mix of work.

Hazel Grimsey will be showing her paintings in various media. Her work has an emphasis on colour in particular but also texture and form. Many are portraits with a South American link but other subjects include still life, flower and landscape painting. Cards, prints of cats, handpainted boxes and enamels will also be available for sale. https://www.bridportopenstudios.co.uk/word/14-hazel-grimsey/

Marian Young is an established abstract painter who has exhibited widely and has participated in Bridport Open Studios for many years. Her work is in private collections in the UK and internationally. Her abstract paintings are motivated by colour and textural application of paint on canvas. Marian has produced a new series for the season: ‘A Splash of Colour’. https://www.bridportopenstudios.co.uk/word/14-marian-young/

Hannah Smith is a professional, freelance freelance costume maker (currently in Belfast making costumes for the new Dracula film starring Luke Evans & Sarah Gadon). With a lifelong obsession with making things, Hannah can usually be found sewing, cutting, sticking, painting, carving, scribbling, building or printing. She specialises in costume, but with a background in theatre design, her work is wide ranging – from corsetry to giant snakes and ladders; paper forests to jewellery; lino cuts to custom made applique banners.

Hannah takes inspiration from materials and their properties, especially those that are found or recycled. The natural world, fairy tales and theatre also have a strong influence on her work. She will be displaying her giant, fabric Snakes & Ladders and a costume or two. Cards, jewellery and gifts will be available for sale. Hannah is available for commissions. https://www.bridportopenstudios.co.uk/word/14-hannah-smith/

Thomas Smith is an accomplished painter having exhibited across the country from Truro to Norwich. Working from his studio on the Suffolk coast near Southwold, Thomas’ contemporary collages, oil paintings and illustrations feature recurrent themes and the use of mixed media and ‘pop art’ inspired imagery. Thomas is also an illustrator and graphic designer and lectures at a local college.https://www.bridportopenstudios.co.uk/word/14-thomas-smith/

David Smith trained as a sculptor and printmaker but is currently mostly making works on paper and collages, including a project to create a collage every day for a year with eight other artists around the world (https://scissorsandglue.co.uk/). ” I have a leaning towards minimalism but a delight in the messy. I am fascinated by the interplay between chaos and control, emotion and the intellect. I am eternally moved and inspired by the forces of nature – her patterns and processes. Landscape forms, especially our coastline, are nearly always at the heart of my work.” https://www.bridportopenstudios.co.uk/word/14-david-smith/

You may have noticed a connection between Hannah, Thomas and David. Yes, that’s right, they all attended Colchester School of Art before progressing to gain degrees: Hannah in Theatre Design in Nottingham; Thomas in Painting at Falmouth; and David in Sculpture & Printmaking at Kingston-on-Thames. Oh and of course they are related! Hannah and Thomas are David’s children and this will be the first time they have exhibited together since their fridge door in 1995!
