As the UK, especially the southern regions are bracing themselves for 80 mile an hour winds and possible flooding we decided it may be a good idea to offer some helpful advice for anyone who might be at risk.

1. Ensure that you are well stocked up with food but in case there is a power cut buy food that does not require freezing.

2. Have a plentiful supply of candles and a couple of torches (with working batteries).

3. If reliant upon electric for heating – have blankets in an accessible place.

4. Clear garden of anything that may be blown around. Put in shed or tie down/bring inside.

5. Perhaps if the pointing in your chimney isn’t great, find somewhere safe in the house if it gets really bad. History has proved that chimneys can be pretty dangerous, especially if they end up in your kitchen/living/bed room! (Sheila Bryan)

6. Move your car away from trees. Make sure windows are closed properly. Cut down any dead trees near your property. (Steve Bush)

7. Ensure all pets are inside.

8. Look out for local people who may be vulnerable.

9. Only go out if it is absolutely necessary.

10. If driving keep speed low so as to avoid any fallen trees…
