A brand new green certification scheme for businesses called Green PEA has already made an impact in Poole, with 21 local companies signing up and others showing interest.

The certification scheme is called the Green Positive Environmental Action scheme or Green PEA for short. It provides companies with a simple review of their business from an energy cost perspective, and then offers suggestions to help the business save money on their energy usage. The scheme is graded so companies can work through to achieving the top status. Joining the scheme initially is completely free, with companies just requiring a written commitment from their senior management team.

The Borough of Poole business action group is part of the Poole Environment Partnership and is responsible for the Green PEA scheme and is delighted that the uptake has been so great. Members include Lush Cosmetics, Poole Bay Holdings Ltd and Dolphin Indoor Bowls Club.

Some of the benefits companies can gain from signing up to Green PEA include a free energy survey, reduced utility bills, increased employee motivation and an opportunity to gain some positive PR in their local community.

Councillor Xena Dion, Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Pooleis pleased with the way the business action group has already achieved significant progress in working towards reducing the Borough’s carbon emissions. She stated, “The Borough of Poole is committed to caring for the environment and the principle of sustainability. Our vision of Poole is of a beautiful place to live, work, learn and play that we can take pride in passing on to future generations. The group has made a great start with the Green PEA certification scheme.

Simon Harrison, chairman of the action group and representative for Poole Chamber of Commerce, commented “The certification scheme will offer all sizes of companies an opportunity to review their energy consumption and take some simple steps to improve their emissions. I would urge all Poole businesses to sign up to Green PEA, as together we can make a significant contribution to the Borough’s  ambitious 20% carbon reduction target by 2020.”
