Dorset beaches have been named among the very best by The Sunday Times (6 July).

Top national newspaper The Sunday Times named Charmouth, Lyme Regis and Weymouth beaches in their Top 50 Best Beaches in the UK and Ireland travel supplement at the weekend.

West Dorset District Council Leader Cllr Robert Gould said: “West Dorset is known for its dramatic coastlines, sweeping landscapes and now our beaches.

“West Dorset is filled with so many beaches for people to enjoy. National supplements such as these really put the area on the map and encourage visitors old and new to come to our district.”

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism and Culture Briefholder Cllr Rachel Rogers said: “I am extremely pleased that the Sunday Times has recognised the borough council-run beach as one of the very best family beaches in Britain. The article gives the borough fantastic coverage and I am sure it will encourage people to come and enjoy our sandy shores for themselves.

“I am also pleased that the paper recognised the excellent family-friendly services that are provided on our beaches, such as the life guards and the ‘lost children’ facility.
