A town centre regeneration site is set to become Bournemouth’s new up and coming quarter next year, now major improvements to the street scene are complete.
As part of the Council’s Three Towns Travel programme Horseshoe Common has undergone a major redevelopment, and now boasts a modern street layout, fresh open space and new street furniture, completely revitalising this part of town.
Using high quality urban design the new layout at Horseshoe Common is based on a shared space approach which is already working well in thriving towns and cities across the UK. It aims to safely integrate all road users and slow people down, encouraging everyone to take additional care, as there may be some uncertainty as to who has priority. In addition to this, the improvements will help ease congestion and improve access for cyclists and pedestrians.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, Bournemouth Borough Council said, “We are delighted that through additional government funding we have been able to carry out these major improvements at Horseshoe Common.
“The shared space around the Common offers those living, working and visiting this part of town a safer and more attractive environment. The results are an example of a co-ordinated and well thought out set of works that complement the ongoing regeneration in this part of town.”
Providing an open space for pedestrians to enjoy the area in a safe manner is a key part of the scheme. A new seating area in the Common offers people the comfort to relax in the green open space, whilst providing a great area for events.
A 20mph zone has also been implemented and night-time road closures will be in place at the centre of Horseshoe Common.
The improvements complement the regeneration work already underway in this area, where a development of flats and commercial space is being led by The Bournemouth Development Company (BDC) – the Council’s delivery partner for the Town Centre Master Vision.

Building overlooking the area is attracting new residents to live in the town centre and contributing to the regeneration of Horseshoe Common.”
