Residents in Bournemouth have the opportunity to pick up a set of free bike lights this winter thanks to the town’s biggest ever travel campaign to get more people cycling.
Delivered as part of the government funded scheme to make cycling easier, safer and more attractive the Council is giving away over 900 ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ packs which include a set of brand new bike lights and reflective accessories.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, said; “Bournemouth is undergoing significant investment to improve cycling facilities across the town. As the population grows there will be more journeys made therefore we are acting now to provide residents and visitors with better sustainable transport options.
“Cycling is a fantastic way to travel and carries many health benefits. As more people take to two wheels it is important they are equipped with the right tools to stay safe.
“One of the most common causes of accidents involving cyclists is that they are not seen by other road users until it is too late. By using clearly displayed lights and wearing bright or reflective clothing cyclists will be visible to other road users. The Be Bright Be Seen pack contains key accessories to help you stay visible when travelling by bike and I would like to invite people to take advantage of the free offer.”
All cyclists are required by law to display a white light on the front of their bike and a red light on the back whenever they ride between sunset and sunrise. These must be attached to the frame and bright enough to be seen without dazzling other road users.
The free ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ packs contain a set of bike lights, a reflective vest or bag cover, and a booklet with handy advice for getting about by bike. Residents can collect a pack from Bournemouth Library, Boscombe Library, Bournemouth University Library, and AUB Library. Numbers are limited so hurry to avoid disappointment.
