Local author David Leadbetter has just published a new book on Purbeck.

Following the success of his first book, Paranormal Purbeck, David has used his intimate knowledge of the area, particularly the flora and fauna and local history, to produce a selection of walks highlighting the ‘magic of Purbeck’.

His book of that name describes where to find some of Purbeck’s notable flora and fauna, including butterflies and dragonflies, birds and plants, and provides helpful identification points.

David also highlights unique historical and archaeological features in the landscape, with special reference to barrows, unusual burials, standing stones, strip lynchets, churches, graves and local industries. Even the old derivation of place names is covered.

David has spent many years exploring the area on foot, recording different aspects of natural history, and often leads guided walks through various organisations.

He says, ‘Walking is one of the healthiest activities that can be engaged in. As well as the obvious physical benefits, there is a spiritual dimension that can be obtained from uplifting views of beautiful places, reducing stress and tension that accrue from our busy lives. A walk can also be an opportunity to learn something new.’

This book certainly inspires you to get out and explore the stunning scenery and wildlife on our doorstep, with clear maps, directions and enticing photographs. All walks can be accessed by public transport, for those who don’t have a car.

Anyone with a love of Purbeck, its flora and fauna and mysterious, alluring nature will enjoy this book, and the colour illustrations are a beautiful keepsake.

The Magic of Purbeck is available from local outlets and publisher Roving Press (tel 01300 321531, www.rovingpress.co.uk) priced £9.99.
