AFC Bournemouth is joining the Healthwatch Dorset project ‘Be Yourself: Everybody Else Is Taken’ to encourage people to tackle discrimination and promote inclusion.

Healthwatch Dorset’s young people’s project ‘Be Yourself: Everybody Else Is Taken’ will receive premier support as it has been announced that the Premiere League football club, AFC Bournemouth, will be joining the campaign which encourages young people across Bournemouth, Poole & Dorset to get creative and share their own experiences of health and social care.

By encouraging young people to share their own stories through creative mediums, the project aims to tackle issues around discrimination and promote inclusion, so that all young people’s opinions will be heard. The project is about breaking down barriers and making positive changes to the way local health and care services are run.

AFC Bournemouth General Manager, Liz Finney, said:

“Addressing issues of discrimination and exclusion is very important to us. So we’re delighted to be working with our local Healthwatch to bring equality and inclusion to the forefront. Their ‘Be Yourself’ project is a great way for younger people to express themselves and we want to encourage our younger fans to take part.”

Emilia Chase, Healthwatch Dorset Young Persons Engagement Officer, explained:

“We’re encouraging young people between the ages of 11 and 25 to use digital and creative mediums to tell us what it’s like to be them – and in particular about their experiences of health (physical or mental), disability, caring for others or the challenges they face with identity, race, gender, sexual orientation. We want to hear about both good and bad experiences.

You can write a poem, story, diary entry, blog or vlog. You can make a film, a piece of drama, dance or send in photography or illustrations about your experiences. Be as creative as you want. We’re going to bring together people who run local health and care services at the end of May to see and hear about your entries, and use your experiences to learn how to make services better.”
