Nigerian-born Tayo Aluko will be giving a talk at Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum about singer and activist Paul Robeson, ahead of his Robeson-inspired play, ‘Call Mr Robeson’ at Dorchester Arts Centre.
Tayo Aluko will be giving the talk as part of Shire Hall museum’s upcoming ‘Journey to Justice’ exhibition which starts in June. The exhibition will look at the US Civil Rights movement, as well as the history of protest in Dorset. Aluko will be talking about his play ‘Call Mr Robeson.’ Paul Robeson was a famous singer, actor and civil-rights campaigner, who has been described as a forerunner of the civil rights movement.
Aluko originally trained as an architect, until a chance conversation led to him discovering the story of Paul Robeson, which would send him on a very different life path: one that has taken him around the world, literally, with his Robeson-inspired play.
Aluko said he is seeking to explain how better-known civil-rights figures are following in Robeson’s own footsteps. With recent developments in America and elsewhere, the journey’s end remains elusive, and he asks, “Which way now?”
Aluko’s talk will be on May 23rd from 7.30 to 8.30pm and he will give his play at Dorchester Arts Centre on May 24. Book both performances and get £1 off.
