Calling all budding writers – get help with your work for free at Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum’s first creative café.
Prize-winning writer of short fiction and poetry, Gail Aldwin, will be holding a free session for creative writers at the café in Shire Hall, Dorchester, on July 18 from 11am-3pm. Writers will be able to drop in or make an appointment for up to 30 minutes of one-to-one support.
The aim of the creative café is to give writers at all stages of their writing journey a chance to get feedback or get involved in some writing activities.
As Chair of the Dorset Writers’ Network Gail supports writers by connecting creative communities. She is a visiting tutor at Arts University Bournemouth and author of Paisley Shirt, a collection of short fiction. The event is free, and Gail is urging people to send her their work beforehand, so she can look over it before the day, and book in for a discussion.
Gail said: “It’s really open to anybody. If people are just starting out at writing, I can give them some pointers or if they have a work in progress, I can give feedback on work people want to send me.”
Gail Aldwin was the lucky winner of the free coffee for a year promotion that Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum ran to celebrate its opening.
Gail often pops into the café to write instead of working from home, she added: “It’s got a great ambience to work in. It’s a great location, it gives me a resurgence of creativity.”

The museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm. Entry is £8.50 for adults, £4.50 for children and £20 for a family, this includes an annual season ticket giving visitors unlimited free returns for a year. The café and gift shop are free to visit.
