With around 50 local authorities from across the UK declaring a climate emergency, Labour are calling on the new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) council to do the same and match it with policies which reflect the gravity of the situation we face.

The call follows the national Labour Party’s announcement on the 28th March that it is declaring an Environment and Climate emergency and has called upon the Government to do likewise.

To date, they have yet to act. Patrick Canavan, Labour’s local campaign secretary said:

“There can be no doubt at all that we are presiding over the most potentially catastrophic climate emergency, and a failure to act now, will lead to events which will be impossible to reverse. We owe it to future generations to put policies in place now, which reduce our damaging impact on the environment.

We need leadership which recognises the gravity of the situation and leaders who are willing to put environmental value above profit and party lines.”Labour has announced that when candidates take up their seats on the newly formed BCP council they will be working tirelessly to implement their key environmental manifesto pledges as well as publishing a comprehensive climate emergency policy statement.
