Witness appeal following death of man on Portland

Detectives investigating the death of a man on Portland are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Dorset Police received a call from the ambulance service at 5.30am today, Sunday 4 August 2019, requesting assistance with traffic management as they treated a man requiring medical assistance in High Street, Fortuneswell on Portland.

Officers attended and sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at around 5.45am.

The road was closed and a cordon was put in place as enquiries were carried into the circumstances of the death.

The next of kin of the man, aged in his 50s and from Weymouth, have been informed and the coroner has been notified.

Detective Inspector Scott Johnson, of Bournemouth CID, said: “We are carrying out a detailed investigation into the circumstances death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

“While we have no reason to suspect any third party involvement, I am keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident and has not already spoken to police.

“I am particularly keen to speak to a man who was seen in company with the deceased man a short time before the incident so we can take an account from him.

“I would also urge anyone who was driving in the Fortuneswell area during the early hours of this morning to check their dashcam footage for anything relevant.”
