A huge problem these days is that people don’t even understand the meanings of the things they pontificate about.

How many of the “socialism doesn’t work” ranters even understand what socialism is, and all the ways in which in which they’ve personally benefitted from socialist policies and institutions like the NHS, the weekend, paid holidays, universal education, workers’ rights, sick pay …?

And how many of the die-hard defenders of capitalism understand that “capitalism” isn’t just a synonym for “trade” or “business”, but that it’s a specific form of economic organisation in which the means of production and economic power are hoarded by the wealthy, leading to systematic exploitation, soaring inequality, and the catastrophic misallocation of Earth’s finite resources?

How is it even possible to have an informed political debate when people refuse to grasp the basic meanings of the concepts they’re arguing about?
