Detectives investigating an attempted robbery in Weymouth are issuing a CCTV image of the suspect and appealing for key witnesses to come forward.

The incident happened at 9.59am on Friday 21 May 2021 at the junction of St. Mary Street and St. Thomas Street, opposite the King’s Statue.

The victim had been to Gladstones jewellers and after leaving the store and walking around the corner, it is reported a man grabbed a box the victim was holding, forcing it from his hand, and made off down Westham Road, turning right into Gloucester Street.

Fortunately, the victim – a man in his 50s – had not returned the item, a Rolex watch, to the box and therefore this was not stolen.

The offender is described as white and aged in his 20s. He was wearing a green hooded top and tracksuit bottoms.

Detective Constable Neil Hooker, of Weymouth CID, said: “As a result of our early investigations we have obtained a CCTV image of the suspect. While I fully acknowledge that this image is not very clear, I am hoping that someone may recognise him from the clothing he is wearing. I would ask anyone who knows who this man is, or who saw him in and around Weymouth town centre between 9.30am and 10am on Friday 21 May, to please contact Dorset Police so further CCTV enquiries can be made.

“I am also keen to identify two witnesses who may have seen the offender running down Westham Road past the Londis store and turning right onto Great George Street immediately after the incident. If you were in this location and saw the man pictured please get in touch.”
