In the past few days, the Daily Mail, Daily Express, Mail on Sunday, and Telegraph have all run articles attacking #StopFundingHate supporters, following the success of our campaign.
In one case, the Daily Mail even likened Stop Funding Hate to the Kray twins(!), while the Sunday Telegraph ran a front page story suggesting that campaigning for an advertising boycott is a “threat to democracy”.
Meanwhile, the Daily Express has published a column attacking Stop Funding Hate supporters and urging its readers to “strike a fatal blow”.
This comes after Ikea, Grolsch, Octopus Energy, Vodafone and a string of other advertisers paused advertising with the controversial new TV channel GB News, following engagement by Stop Funding Hate supporters.
It’s not the first time that UK newspapers have lashed out at the #StopFundingHate community: We saw a similar response in 2017 after Paperchase announced that they were ending their promotions with the Daily Mail.
Since the Mail’s latest attacks began, Stop Funding Hate has gained thousands more Twitter followers and received over £2,000 in new donations.
We’ve also had lots of updates from #StopFundingHate supporters who have contacted advertisers, and heartening messages of solidarity.
It seems clear to many that the ferocity of the media backlash is a reflection of the impact that the campaign is having.
So we’ll continue to press on: Stop Funding Hate’s volunteer team will keep working to help identify the remaining advertisers on GB News, and we’ll be posting updates on our website here.
