Professor of International Law rings the alarm for our dying freedom

Nils Melzer, Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian says Julian Assange is a political prisoner who has not received a fair trial.

Prof Melzer is ringing the alarm which is heard clearly in Geneva but which has been silenced with big media’s complicity in London. Yet it is in South East London where Assange is held in Belmarsh – a Maximum Security prison for dangerous criminals and terrorists – where Melzer argues Assange has been psychologically tortured. The results of this torture are plain to see in Assange’s weight loss, mental deterioration and stroke and it is likely he will die in a British or US jail unless public pressure for his release builds.

You are unlikely to hear about that campaign in the British mainstream media and Dorset Eye must be supported and protected as one of the citizen media outlets where you can read about this case. If the Assange case is allowed to be shrugged off the future of journalism, publishing, whistleblowing (from war crimes in Iraq and where corrupt dictators launder their money, to the story dominating this week – No 10 Christmas parties aka ‘Mincepiegate’) is at stake. We must talk about this case because the future of our freedom to speak and know about the secrets corporations, the military and our governments want to hide from us depends on it.
