Sid James was born in1913 in South Africa and died in 1976, of a heart attack, whilst on stage in Sunderland.
Most famous for being a member of the Carry On Team he was also with Tony Hancock in Hancock’s Half Hour and as Sid Abbott in Bless This House.

The month before Sid James died he gave an interview whilst touring the play The Mating Season in Bournemouth. It was only discovered over forty years after his death.
As Sid James was from a Jewish family he hated all things Nazi and what they stood for and also anti-Semites more generally. The following is an incident that occurred whilst on his way to filming Hancock’s Half Hour that also enabled him to put in play one of his other notable skills. That of boxing.
Sid James was an inveterate gambler, drinker and smoker and thus for many it was no surprise that he died relatively young. However, he packed more in to his life than many who live considerably longer.
One little known fact is that Kenneth Williams, also of Carry On fame, is said to have disliked co-star Sid James for being “too coarse”.
What with the laugh it is probably not an altogether inaccurate summary of Sid’s characters along the way.
