WHO: Volunteers in the Southill area of Weymouth are needed to take part in a one-off art project. The volunteers will help welcome riders taking part in the Tour of Britain cycle race as they pass Weymouth Town Council’s Tumbledown site on stage seven of the tour.

We need around 100 people who are within walking distance or a short cycle ride from Tumbledown in the Southill area.

WHAT: We need people to be part of a design showing the word W-E-Y-M-O-U-T-H and a large penny-farthing style bicycle. This will take place in one of the fields at Tumbledown and each person will hold up a large piece of card to help make the design stand out. The cards will be red, white and blue in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year. All artwork will be supplied.

We want the design to be visible from the air and hopefully filmed by a helicopter flying over the route as it films the race. The Tour of Britain is televised live on ITV4 in the UK and around the world by Eurosport and the Global Cycling Network.

As well as the art project there will also be other activities taking place on site including building bug house hotels, a nature trail, and a woodland walk.

WHERE: Tumbledown community space, Radipole Lane, Southill.

WHEN: Saturday 10th September from 10am to 12pm.

WHY: Help us put this area of Weymouth on the map and catch the attention of viewers around the world who will watch the race on television and online. It’s also a chance to participate in a community arts project, meet new friends, and find out more about the work that’s happening at Tumbledown.

Need to know: Radipole Lane will need to be kept clear for the race so to help manage numbers on site during the day it’s vital that volunteers either walk or cycle to Tumbledown. This is why the event is specifically aimed at residents in Southill.

Please also be advised you will need to have weather-appropriate clothing and suitable footwear.
