The first thing I disagree with the new owners of Wrexham AFC on.
Banning Paul Mullin wearing his new boots that have ‘F*** The Tories’ in them saying Wrexham FC is ‘politically neutral’. Correctly, Wrexham FC is absolutely NOT politically neutral; one obvious example is the support and endorsement of Wrexham Foodbank. To repeat, this is absolutely the correct thing to do, but it’s not ‘politically neutral’. Ditto Rainbow laces (again, which I support) etc etc. The fans, like at Liverpool FC, chant ‘F*** The Tories’ all the time these days. They will, along with me, in the stands at tonight’s match. You cannot ban Mullin for something that is NOT actually written on his boots…that is not a million miles away from arresting and charging protestors for holding up blank pieces of paper.
Equally so, if a player wanted to wear ‘F*** Labour’ boots, while I may disagree, that player should absolutely be allowed to wear them. If you are going to say Wrexham AFC is ‘politically neutral’, then you’re going to have to stop doing an awful lot of great things the club does now. Giving away tickets to the poorest? I 100% support this. But it is absolutely political.

Mullen is paid by Wrexham FC and thus, is representing the club who at the end of the day are a business. If he was self employed, he can do what he wants but in this case, the club don’t want someone making a political statement like this. I’m guessing they’d do the same if a player wanted to have F*** Labour on their boots. If I’m representing my company in a public setting, they also have company policies and I wouldn’t be allowed to display such a political statement either.
