Rachel Milless, from Big Lake, MN, had the flu in November. She was home alone with her 4-year-old son, Asher, and his 2 brothers, ages 2 and 1, when she felt she couldn’t breathe. Rachel, who is a nurse and suffers from asthma, knew that she needed to go to the hospital, so she was getting ready to drop off her children and go.
She reached to get her nebuliser and at that moment she fell on the floor.
That’s when her 4-year-old son stepped into action.
“He just instinctively brought [the nebuliser] over and plugged it in and hooked it up and put all the meds in it.” Rachel commented. “He held it to my face and said, ‘Just breathe mom’, and was practicing with me.”
After that, Asher got his younger brothers out of the kitchen and gave them snacks and toys to distract them.
Then he grabbed his mom’s cell phone and told Siri to “call daddy”. His message prompted the phone to call Rachel’s father who alerted nearby living family members and called 911.
According to doctors, Rachel went
“into septic shock from complications due to influenza A” and her son’s quick thinking saved her life.
The Sherburne County Sheriff honoured Asher with a Life Saving Award for his actions.
