Dorset Council’s Health and Activity team are running free physical activity sessions in Wimborne over the coming weeks to encourage people to get outdoors, get some light exercise and make some new friends.
Health walks start from Wimborne library on Mondays (not Bank Holidays) and Tuesdays every week, with a new outdoor fitness circuit class launching at Bytheway Field on Tuesday evenings from 2nd May.
Wimborne Health Walks
A health walk is a free, short, and regular guided walk that lasts between ten to ninety minutes for people of all abilities, especially for those who would like to get more active. It is the perfect activity to improve your health and wellbeing, and you can start slowly and build your fitness gently, at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Specially trained volunteer health walk leaders are on hand to welcome you with a friendly smile, provide encouragement and support you throughout the walk.
Wimborne health walks have been going since 2006. Today, Dorset Council co-ordinate health walks all over Dorset in partnership with Ramblers Wellbeing walks.
These walks offer local people a chance for group conversation, company, and a reason to get moving. We have also teamed up with Wimborne library who offer free tea and chat with their “Cuppa and Company” days every Monday.
From Monday 17th April, health walks will start from Wimborne library at 10.15am on Mondays (not Bank Holidays) and Tuesdays each week. No need to pre-book, you can just turn up on the day
Some of the leaders who still take out the free hour-long walks were the original leaders! They have done and are still doing a fantastic job. But they need help, we need more leaders – if you think you can also offer some time to help lead a walk, please email us at [email protected]
With so many beautiful parks, green spaces, towns and villages waiting to be explored in Dorset, our community walks give you the opportunity to discover new places, meet new people and share a social cuppa afterwards.
Free outdoor fitness circuits
If you have thought about doing a bit of exercise that will raise your heart rate and burn some calories, then come along to these free instructor-led fitness sessions, which are held outside in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Sessions are free and you can turn up on the day.
Dorset Council’s Health and Activity team are putting on free outdoor fitness circuits at Bytheway Field off Leigh Road, Wimborne. The sessions will be fun and open to all (children must be accompanied) and are ideal for a beginner or improver.
The location is easy to walk or cycle to, and the sessions start on Tuesday 2nd May between 7- 8pm, continuing every week throughout the summer.
Cllr Peter Wharf, Dorset Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, said:
“Being active outdoors is good not just for your body, but also for your mind. Exercising in an outdoor environment can improve mood, reduce levels of depression, reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate. What better reason to get out there and enjoy what Dorset has to offer?
“These sessions are free, friendly and you do not need to book in advance. There is no long-term commitment, so whether you are looking to improve your health and wellbeing, and/or hoping to have a nice chat with some new friends, these activities have something for everyone.”
