Following recent comments in the press and on social media, we want to provide clarity regarding the repairs we are carrying out to Mohuns Great Bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure spanning the River Frome on the outskirts of Dorchester.
Our crew are working hard to complete the repairs as quickly as possible, within environmental and architectural constraints.
We have allowed three weeks to complete the work, as it cannot be carried out in wet weather. However, with the current dry spell, we are on track to finish well within that time.
The work is essential because an 8-metre section of the bridge wall was dislodged from its bed by a road traffic accident, affecting the stability of the bridge.
We work closely with external organisations, like the Environment Agency, to ensure all our work is done so without impact on the natural environment. This means work that involves watercourses like the River Frome can only be undertaken at certain times of the year, in this case between the end of April and October.
As soon as we surveyed the damage caused to the bridge, we applied for permits to carry out the work. Organising our specialist teams to repair the structure, obtaining all the necessary consents, organising equipment and other specialist materials can take several months. With the summer holidays fast approaching, we have a small window in which to complete the work.
Being Grade 2 listed, we must use specific materials, including lime mortar that cannot be applied in frosty conditions. We must also preserve and reuse the existing bricks, with careful cleaning and restoration. This requires both time and the expertise of specialists.
All businesses in the local area are open as usual and, when planning the work, our highways team spoke to them and acted on their concerns. For example, by erecting extra signs on the A352.
Our team is working to complete the work as quickly as they can, within the constraints. We thank everyone for their understanding and patience while they complete these essential repairs.
