A Critique of First Past the Post

If only we had a PR electoral System, as do Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland devolved Parliaments. The massive divisions in both the US and GB are down to the need to cobble together opposing views in the 2 parties that result from First Past the Post.

The Tory party is currently in a mess, as it has been since 2010, due to the ERG ultra right anti EU group who in the end bought down Cameron with Brexit result, Teresa May because of he stubborn clinging to her red lines. Johnson of course was bought down by a distaste for lies and corruption. However he had thrown in his lot with the ERG even taking the whip away from so many One Nation Tories.

Similarly from the moment ‘chancer’ Blair’s pretend adoption of socialism in order to gain power led to the beginning of the ideological split  in the Labour Party.

The ideological position of unions, working class members and also many councillors led to the vile machinations of New Labour’s Blair and Mandelson creating devolution but not for England ensuring the Safe Seats under FPTP could be packed with neo liberal MPs.

The shock election of first Ed Miliband whose leadership was under  their control, diminishing his undoubted great oratorical skills with their Focus Group ‘soppy slogans and soundbites’.  The second shock, that of  Jeremy Corbyn was met with the most deplorable behaviour by the New Labour Mob.

Effectively they have further, under another lawyer dressed up as labour, purged, in their thousands, socialist members, officers in CLP’s, even getting rid of great councillors.

That is why the writing on the wall echoes one of my gurus “Small is Beautiful”.

Under PR systems, yes you do get smaller parties but you give the electorate real choice. When I studied politics no one told me you should only have big party government. Ironically both the US and GB have an irrational hatred of the former USSR and now China because they had/have big one party government.

The political confusion in GB now stems from the ideological differences within the party, particularly its obsession, as with Starmer’s labour, with the inhuman neo liberal prioritisation of Shareholder Dividends, escalation of wealth to the 1%, markets and a small state, low wage economies.

At a time when there are severe weather events the failure of the government to take any action sufficient to stop let alone reverse the adverse effects of Climate Change it was unbelievable that a Prime Minister anywhere could be advocating Growth.
