One of the aims of the Weymouth BID business plan is to attract more visitors to the town out of season and one of the best ways to do this is by hosting great events.  In 2013 Weymouth BID commissioned Roger Dalton Associates to deliver two events each year, the Victorian Shownight in December and a Maritime event in September.   This year we see a new maritime festival WATERFEST WEYMOUTH, a celebration of Dorset’s maritime heritage.  This festival will provide a platform for the local marine related businesses to showcase their products and services and a fantastic opportunity for visitors to see what Weymouth has to offer.

Waterfest will be held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2014.   Saturday  11am – 6pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm

The main festival site is set around Weymouth’s historic old harbour where the quayside will be divided up into specialist areas focussing on sailing, diving, underwater exploration and traditional maritime crafts from boat building to lobster pot making.  This will be complemented by a wide range of food, shanty music and a rolling programme of entertainment both onshore and afloat.

Roger Dalton, Event Organiser said “Waterfest will have something for everyone from the prestigious tall ship, Le Marite to the famous Gipsy Moth IV that circumnavigated the globe in 1966/67.  Demonstrations will include amazing “James Bond” style flyboarding displays to diving displays by the Historic Diving Association in the dive tank right through to the traditional crafts of lobster pot making and knot tying.  This is a great opportunity for marine based businesses to get involved and show off their products to visitors”.

The festival is also providing an opportunity for many maritime charities to promote their work like the Wreck to Reef project, the Little Brig Trust than runs accessible sailing training for teenagers on their boat Caroline Allen and the Boat Building Academy from Lyme Regis who will be displaying two of their student boats.  Our nominated charity is the local area Sea Cadet Corps and Weymouth Sea Cadets will be showing their skills on and off the water during the festival.
