A 76-year-old woman, who had previously shocked her family by unexpectedly knocking on her own coffin after being wrongly declared dead, has sadly passed away.
According to Ecuador’s health ministry, Bella Montoya spent seven days in intensive care but tragically suffered a stroke and died on Friday evening. Following the unusual incident in the city of Babahoyo, which led to a government investigation into the hospital, she had been under constant observation.
In response to the incident, a technical committee has been established to review the hospital’s procedures for issuing death certificates. However, Bella Montoya’s son, Gilberto, expressed his disappointment with the authorities, as he has yet to receive a medical explanation regarding the events that transpired. He emphasised that the matter would not be left unresolved.
Additionally, Bella Montoya’s sister has lodged a formal complaint and is determined to identify the doctor responsible for erroneously declaring her deceased. Mrs. Montoya, who was formerly a nurse herself, was urgently rushed back to the hospital after spending five hours alive inside her coffin at a funeral home on Friday.
“It was an incredibly alarming experience for all of us,” recounted Mr. Montoya. “Approximately 20 of us were present… After about five hours during the wake, we began hearing sounds coming from the coffin. As we approached, we noticed my mother was wrapped in sheets and vigorously hitting the coffin. It was evident that she was breathing heavily.”
Presently, Bella Montoya’s remains have been returned to the same funeral home where the incident initially occurred. She will be laid to rest in a public cemetery.
