All Those Questions We Wanted Jeremy Corbyn To Answer

Alright, perhaps not all, but certainly many of them.

Let’s get cracking – over to Jeremy, sitting with a coffee and Owen Jones in Finsbury Park.

Just 10 of Jeremy’s accomplishments:

1. Transforming the Labour Party’s Membership and Ideology

Under Corbyn’s leadership, Labour saw a huge surge in membership, becoming the largest political party in Western Europe at the time. He shifted the party significantly to the left, emphasising democratic socialism, public ownership, and anti-austerity policies.

2. 2017 General Election Performance

In the 2017 general election, Labour under Corbyn defied expectations by increasing its vote share by the largest margin since 1945 and gaining 30 seats, resulting in a hung parliament. This was seen as a vindication of his progressive manifesto.

3. Advocating for Peace and Diplomacy

Corbyn has long been known for his consistent stance on anti-war and peace advocacy, opposing the Iraq War, criticizing UK involvement in foreign conflicts, and supporting diplomatic solutions over military interventions.

4. Championing Anti-Austerity Politics

Corbyn brought economic inequality and austerity to the forefront of UK political debate. His policies helped reframe the conversation around public investment, welfare, and the role of government in tackling poverty.

5. Environmental Advocacy

Corbyn prioritised climate change and green energy in Labour’s platform. His leadership contributed to Labour adopting one of the most ambitious Green New Deal plans in the UK, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions.

6. Longstanding Human Rights Advocacy

Throughout his career, Corbyn has been an advocate for international human rights, supporting causes such as Palestinian rights, opposing apartheid in South Africa, and challenging arms sales to regimes accused of human rights abuses.

7. Making Rail Nationalisation Mainstream

Corbyn helped bring the idea of re-nationalising the UK railways into the political mainstream, an idea that has gained widespread public support.

8. Supporting Grassroots Movements

He empowered grassroots activism within and outside the Labour Party, encouraging local democracy and community organizing, particularly through the Momentum movement that grew during his leadership.

9. Raising Awareness of Income and Wealth Inequality

Corbyn persistently emphasised the disparities between the rich and poor, making tax justice, living wages, and wealth redistribution central topics in national discourse.

10. Defending the NHS and Public Services

He was a staunch defender of the National Health Service (NHS) and public services, advocating for increased funding, opposition to privatisation, and free prescriptions and parking.
