Are You Having A Laugh?

A brilliant story told by ex-Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley about Brian Clough.

Brian Clough: The Maverick Manager and His Famous Quotes

Brian Clough remains one of the most enigmatic and celebrated football managers in British history. Known for his sharp wit, unshakeable self-confidence, and unorthodox methods, Clough left an indelible mark on the sport. His success at Derby County and Nottingham Forest, including two consecutive European Cup triumphs with the latter, solidified his legendary status. However, beyond his achievements, Clough was renowned for his colourful quotes and idiosyncratic behaviour.

The Man Who Knew Best

One of Clough’s most famous quips perfectly encapsulates his self-belief:

“We talk about it for twenty minutes, and then we decide I was right.”

This statement, directed at players who dared to challenge his decisions, showcased his unyielding confidence. He believed that strong leadership required conviction, and he rarely wavered in his opinions.

A Manager Unlike Any Other

Clough’s ability to motivate players was unparalleled. He had a knack for man management, knowing exactly how to bring the best out of his squad. Despite his authoritarian approach, he had a softer side, often displaying genuine care for his players. His wit extended to how he handled adversity, as seen in this remark:

“If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, He’d have put grass up there.”

A firm believer in passing football, Clough despised the long-ball game, a philosophy that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

The Infamous Leeds United Spell

Clough’s infamous 44-day stint at Leeds United in 1974 remains one of the most discussed managerial reigns in football history. He took over a team that had been highly successful under Don Revie but made the mistake of criticising their previous methods. Upon his sacking, he reportedly told his players:

“You can all throw your medals in the bin, because they were not won fairly.”

His disdain for the cynical, aggressive style of Leeds under Revie ultimately led to his downfall at Elland Road. However, his dismissal paved the way for his future triumphs at Nottingham Forest.

The European Glory Years

Taking Nottingham Forest from Second Division obscurity to back-to-back European Cup winners in 1979 and 1980 was Clough’s crowning achievement. His ability to build and rebuild successful teams was unmatched. When asked about his success, he quipped:

“Rome wasn’t built in a day. But I wasn’t on that particular job.”

His quick wit and bravado often masked a deep tactical understanding that allowed him to outmanoeuvre his rivals time and time again.

A Lasting Legacy

Clough retired in 1993, leaving behind a footballing legacy that few could match. Despite never managing the England national team—a role many believed he deserved—his influence on English football remains profound. His larger-than-life personality, combined with his remarkable success, ensured that his name would be remembered long after he stepped away from the game.

As Clough himself once famously declared:

“I wouldn’t say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one.”

A character like Brian Clough is unlikely to be seen again in modern football, where charisma and blunt honesty are often sacrificed for media-trained diplomacy. Yet, for those who witnessed his era, Clough’s legacy endures as one of the greatest, most entertaining, and most unique figures the game has ever seen.

See you next time.
