Hi, my name is Karen Bruce. I studied History of Art and Painting at DeMontford university, Leicester. After leaving college I lived for a number of years in London and Brighton. During this time I exhibited in a various venues including Alexander Palace. I was doing mainly landscapes at this stage predominately in oil. In order to make ends meet I temporarily worked as a sketch portrait artist in London’s West End. This was good experience in learning how to draw quickly I also developed a greater interest in portraiture and painting the human figure.
I describe myself as a figurative artist but I don’t aim for a photographic representation. As a result of this I work mainly from life and imagination. At the present I am particularly interested in painting people in “social situations”. I’ve also done some portrait commissions. I try to capture a sense of movement and the vibrancy of every day life. My favourite medium is acrylic, it allows me to build up layers and to paint quickly. I also like to use a variety of media, including oils and pastel.
Please come and see us at the Weymouth Old Town Hall. We shall be open daily from 11am – 6pm from 24th May – 8th June.
