Emily Thornberry and controversy

Emily Thornberry, a prominent figure in British politics, has certainly had her fair share of controversial moments throughout her career. As a member of the Labour Party and a former Shadow Cabinet Minister, Thornberry’s actions and statements have often sparked debates and divided opinions. From social media blunders to political missteps, her journey in the political arena has been marked by moments that have left both supporters and critics alike questioning her judgment and suitability for high office.

One of Thornberry’s most infamous incidents occurred during the 2014 Rochester and Strood by-election campaign. As the Shadow Attorney General at the time, Thornberry tweeted a photo of a house in Rochester adorned with several England flags and a white van parked outside. The tweet was accompanied by the caption, “Image from #Rochester.” The seemingly innocuous tweet, intended to highlight what Thornberry perceived as out-of-touch elitism within the Conservative Party, backfired spectacularly. Many viewed it as a patronising and disdainful attitude towards working-class voters, reinforcing stereotypes about Labour’s detachment from its traditional support base.

The backlash was swift and severe, with Thornberry facing accusations of snobbery and arrogance. Critics argued that her tweet epitomised the disconnect between Labour’s leadership and ordinary voters, contributing to a growing perception of the party as out-of-touch and aloof. In the aftermath of the incident, Thornberry resigned from her position in the Shadow Cabinet, acknowledging that her tweet had been a mistake. The episode not only damaged Thornberry’s reputation but also served as a cautionary tale about the perils of political communication in the age of social media.

Beyond her social media blunder, Thornberry has also courted controversy through her stance on various issues, including Brexit and foreign policy. As a staunch advocate for remaining in the European Union, Thornberry found herself at odds with elements within her own party who supported Brexit. Her vocal opposition to Brexit, coupled with her support for a second referendum, positioned her as a divisive figure within Labour ranks, exacerbating tensions between the party’s pro- and anti-Brexit factions.

Thornberry’s foreign policy positions have also drawn scrutiny, particularly her views on Israel and Palestine. Critics have accused her of bias against Israel and of endorsing policies that are perceived as overly sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Thornberry’s remarks on these issues have sparked heated debates within the Labour Party and the broader political landscape, reflecting the complex and contentious nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Despite these controversies, Thornberry remains a significant figure in British politics, known for her impassioned advocacy on issues such as social justice, human rights, and gender equality. Her resilience in the face of adversity and her willingness to speak out on contentious issues have earned her both admirers and detractors. While her controversial moments may have tarnished her reputation to some extent, Thornberry continues to wield influence within Labour circles and remains a force to be reckoned with on the political stage. Whether she can overcome the shadow of her past controversies and achieve greater success in the future remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Emily Thornberry’s journey in British politics is far from over.

Thus, when she came out and supported the Starmerite line that Israel had a right to cut off water, food and power from the Palestinain people because of the alledged behaviour of Hamas, last October, she was seen as abandoning her principles for her own ends.

Unlike the corporate media, Ash Sarkar has no issues with dispatching Ms. Thornberry’s historical revisionism.
