If you’ve got half an hour to spare and a tin of paint, please don’t use it to vandalise road markings. Instead, there are plenty of vulnerable people who could do with a hand decorating their home or community spaces that need graffiti painted over. What a difference you’ll make.
If you’ve got an hour to spare and fancy a walk, please don’t attach cheap flags to motorway bridges. Instead, protect native flora by taking a walk down your local waterwayand pulling up some Himalayan balsam, or do a litter pick—there’ll be plenty of flags blowing around soon, clogging up drains and obstructing the view of drivers as they fall. You’ll be doing a real service
If you want people to know that you’re patriotic and you have a few quid to spare, please don’t spend it on a poor-quality, plastic flag made in China. Instead donate the money to charity or invest in decent-quality, British-made products and display them in your own home for all to see. How festive it will look (not being sarcastic—I actually love a good flag).
Nobody is stopping us from flying flags, chums. They have been flown for centuries. The issue is not to let ignorant bigots claim it and make the country look stupid and witless. You know the ones I mean.
And if you are still desperate to paint the roundabouts, join a movement of decency not bland, blind ignorance.
