The Studio Jazz seasons at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, have long been synonymous with superb music and an inclusive programming policy and the autumn line up is no exception.

The season opens on 9 October with the brilliantly gifted Gwyneth Herbert making her Studio debut. A versatile musical adventurer, she’s a mesmerising performer and her songs are strikingly original as her two sets will amply demonstrate.

Mentored since his college days by the legendary Quincy Jones, multi award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Ollie Howell brings his quintet to town on 23 October. He’s followed into the Studio on 6 November by the Darius Brubeck Quartet, which has earned a fine reputation for its blend of South African jazz, Dave Brubeck hits and Darius’ own compositions.

With a warm and projecting tone that’s instantly recognisable, trumpeter Jay Phelps (20 November) is at the forefront of Britain’s young and creative jazz musicians. He has performed with a veritable who’s-who of modern jazz greats from Wynton Marsalis and Courtney Pine to Jamie Cullum and Amy Winehouse, not to mention Sir John Dankworth and George Benson.  For his latest project, Projection of Miles, he has assembled an all-star line up that includes former Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint, to re-arrange and perform some of the music of Miles Davis, one of Jay’s major influences.

The autumn season comes to a close on 4 December with two of Britain’s best and best-loved elder statesmen of mainstream modern jazz, Don Weller and Art Themen and their quintet. Don and Art’s mutually inspiring interplay and musical jousting has been thrilling audiences for decades.

Studio Jazz at Lighthouse is programmed in partnership with Bournemouth Modern Jazz Club, Swanage Jazz and Soundstorm.
