Setting up a dog business without a dog? There’s only one word for it… Absurd! Luckily, there’s method in the madness for local girl Kate Geary, as Absurd Design was born.

After spending 6 months travelling across Canada looking after different dogs, Kate became inspired by the colourful landscape and dreamt of owning her own pooch, “Duck” the Canadian Toller.

The Graphic Design Kingston University graduate, and former Budmouth student is experienced in working with leather and fabrics and wanted to find a way to create handmade and unique products for dogs, and their owners – despite not having a dog of her own to put a collar and lead on!

Kate said: “Yes, I know. It’s crazy and just a tiny bit absurd but I felt so passionately about creating fashionable and stylish accessories that were also durable and practical. I have always wanted to set up my own business and coming home was the perfect place and time for such a challenge. But I wanted to make it even better by hand making completely individual products, which I believe my future dog would wear.”

Her sewing room based in her family home in Weymouth is full of amazing materials ready to create a masterpiece for you and your pet. Although her business is primarily for dogs, Kate adds that it’s just a start as she hopes to roll out other pet accessories including beds for dogs and cats hopefully by Christmas.
