Local people will go to the polls on 22 May 2014 to elect a third of Weymouth and Portland borough councillors.

The borough council has produced a leaflet explaining who can stand for election, the nomination process and what councillors do. It also has practical information on the time commitment, allowances and the support provided for councillors.

Councillors play a key role in the borough and are the voice of the community, representing local people. They help shape future services for the benefit of local people by collectively carrying out policy making and contributing to the formation and scrutiny of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s policies, budget, and strategies.

By representing the views of local people as a community advocate, councillors ensure that local community interests are taken into account. The leaflet produced by the borough council explains the services the council provides, the role of councillors and the election process.

For a copy of the leaflet please contact the borough council’s Democratic Services Team on 01305 252349 or email [email protected]. The Democratic Services Team will also be able to offer advice, suggest committee meetings that interested individuals may wish to attend and arrange meetings with serving councillors.

The deadline for the submission of nomination papers is 4pm on Thursday 24 April.
