Prime Minister,
Well, Scotland haven’t even said their goodbyes yet, and already Berwick have voted by over 60% in favour of also leaving Westminster’s control. That’s up from 51% ten years ago. I wonder what result a similar poll in Carlisle might deliver?
Of course, the Tory press is automatically trying to smear Alex Salmond, claiming that he’s seizing the chance to add weight to a grab for oil and fishing reserves by an independent Scotland, but the one thing they can’t hide or explain away is that this is a majority vote, which is that damned annoyance called democracy that you despise so openly, by ordinary people, not politicians.
Maybe you ought to start asking yourself what might be the results of regional or county polls on an identical subject throughout the UK, because I’ll tell you straight: If someone offered me the chance to vote on whether or not Wessex should secede from London I’d be there like a shot with a cross ready-made to place in the “YES” box. Ha! I’d be ironing the bloody thing in with a steam hammer!
Even though you would never have the guts to run such a poll without trying to skew the results, I think it would provide a serious wake-up call to those on the Wasteminster gravy train. Maybe someone ought to raise one as a petition on Change dot org or similar. The reasons accompanying the signatures would, I think, be easier to forecast, “Sick to death of Osborne’s austerity lies and Duncan Smith’s people-killing policies” probably being the chief reasons that people would sign, although they might just come second to “Wanting to get away from expenses-swindling, money-grabbing, over-subsidised MP’s and Royals.”
Whatever the reasons, I reckon it would provide a concrete vote of No Further Confidence in career politicians who very provably don’t give a monkey’s toss about ordinary people. Hmm… this looks like a job for social media, don’t you think?
Sincerely,
Darren Lynch
