Supporters of a controversial film about Jeremy Corbyn are launching a “blitz on censorship” this weekend.
Uncensored! The Festival on a farm outside Bristol this Saturday will climax with the biggest ever screening of the film, “Oh Jeremy Corbyn – The Big Lie”. This will be followed on Sunday by a massive online viewing of the film with an audience of almost 2,000 people already booked to take part,
Event organiser Crispin Flintoff said: “This weekend is the start of a fightback against attempts to suppress a film people need to see. We are launching a blitz on the most insidious, backdoors censorship in recent political history.”
The film, which tells the story of the rise and fall of Jeremy Corbyn, was launched in London in February and has been screened across the country — but has become a target of complaints and cancellations in recent weeks.
Mr Flintoff said: “Vicious and unprincipled self-appointed censors are trying to stop people from seeing this film because it raises important questions about what caused the downfall of Jeremy Corbyn. We are going to beat the censors and make sure that everyone who wants to see this film will be able to see it.”
The Labour Party, TUC and individual trade unions have all banned the film or warned members off seeing it. Recently in Tunbridge Wells a Labour councillor had the whip removed by his local party after watching the film. The film was scheduled to be screened at the Glastonbury festival last month, but organisers dropped the film at short notice after it received complaints that the film was guilty of “antisemitism denial”.
Mr Flintoff: “These complaints have absolutely no foundation. The people making them are the same people who attacked and smeared Jeremy Corbyn and are now trying to smear a film about him.”
Mr Flintoff said that since the film was dropped by Glastonbury it has been stopped from being screened in over 30 venues across the country. “These people use scare tactics, implying that by screening the film venues may be breaking the law — all a total bluff of course.”
The Saturday festival will feature an extraordinary lineup of speakers revealing the censorship they have faced. There will be a contribution from from controversial rock musician Roger Waters and film-maker Ken Loach will denounce the ban on the Corbyn film.
Mr Loach, who appears in the film, said: “The essential truth in this film is that Jeremy Corbyn was driven out by what the journalist, Peter Oborne called a ‘political assassination’. Who wielded the knife? See this film and find out!”
Mr Loach added: “You can try to ban the truth, but it will always come out in the end.”
Mr Flintoff claims that attacks on the film are only part of a much wider censorship trend in the mainstream media.
He said: “We are now really not allowed to talk about Corbyn in the mainstream media and the views and ideas he championed and almost won the 2017 election with now seem to be taboo. It’s a diabolical.”
Mr Flintoff, who in the past raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Labour by organising over 250 stand up comedy events, now believes the party has gone in totally the wrong direction and is terrified by the prospect of Starmer getting to power.
He said: “Starmer is a ruthless, authoritarian bureaucrat who doesn’t allow the slightest dissent inside his own party — I think if he gets to be prime minister, things can only get worse!”
Mr Flintoff added: “We will beat the censors. We will not stop until we have show this film to the world. We have got to get the truth out there.”
