For those who have not come across the ex Tory MP Gyles Brandreth let me enlighten.

Gyles Brandreth is a British writer, broadcaster, actor, and former politician. He was born on March 8, 1948, in Germany. Brandreth has had a diverse career, encompassing various fields.

In politics, Brandreth was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1997, representing the City of Chester constituency in the United Kingdom. However, he did not seek re-election after serving one term.

Brandreth is also known for his work in the media. He has been a regular contributor and presenter on television and radio programs in the UK, covering a range of topics from literature and arts to current affairs. He has appeared on shows such as “Have I Got News for You” and “The One Show.”

As an author, Gyles Brandreth has written numerous books, including both fiction and non-fiction works. His books often explore topics such as history, language, and popular culture. He has also written a series of mystery novels featuring Oscar Wilde as the detective.

In addition to his political and media career, Brandreth has made appearances as an actor in various stage productions and television shows. He has performed in plays such as “Hamlet” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Overall, Gyles Brandreth is a well-known figure in British media and has made significant contributions in the fields of politics, broadcasting, writing, and acting.

And sooner or later one’s past catches up with you especially when one hangs out with known child rapists.

And the public reaction in two tweets:

And Mr Brandreth, your friend Gary Glitter:

Gary Glitter is the stage name of Paul Francis Gadd, a British singer, songwriter, and musician. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as a glam rock icon, known for his energetic performances and flamboyant style. Glitter achieved considerable commercial success with hit songs like “Rock and Roll (Part 2)” and “I’m the Leader of the Gang (I Am).”

However, Gary Glitter’s career and reputation were marred by criminal activities. In the late 1990s, he was convicted of possessing child pornography, which resulted in a prison sentence. His crimes were exposed further in the early 2000s when he was found guilty of sexually abusing underage girls in Vietnam. Glitter was sentenced to imprisonment in Vietnam and later extradited to the United Kingdom.

Due to his criminal actions, Gary Glitter’s music and public image have become highly controversial and widely condemned. His songs are often removed from radio playlists and public performances, and he is generally regarded as a pariah in the music industry. It is important to note that Glitter’s crimes are separate from his music career, and his actions should not be conflated with the broader genre of glam rock or the artists associated with it.

And Mr Brandreth was still the after dinner speaker of choice of a certain Mr Boris Johnson.

Can the UK sink any lower?

Of course it can.
