Cyclists in Bournemouth will soon be able to ride across Pier Approach and Bournemouth Square as the town gears up to become more cycle friendly.
Bournemouth Borough Council will soon begin trialing a 12 month pilot scheme which will allow those on two wheels to cycle through Pier Approach and The Square.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, said, “We want to make Bournemouth a cycle friendly town for everyone to enjoy. This trial scheme is about providing residents and visitors with easier, safer and more attractive ways to travel across the town. By lifting the cycling restrictions we are creating improved routes for those who wish to cycle but do not necessarily want to cycle on busy roads.”
During the trial period, the Council will monitor the impact before a decision is made on whether to make the trial permanent.
Councillor Filer, added; “Other towns and cities already permit cycling in central pedestrian areas and these appear to be working well. In the long term it is important we create an environment which encourages all road users to travel in a safe and respectful manner towards each other.”
In a bid to make Bournemouth cycle friendly for people of all ages and abilities the Council is investing in a major programme to encourage more people to travel around the town on two wheels. From on the ground improvements such as additional cycle lanes, crossings and traffic calming measures, to cycle training for children and adults.
The Council is also working in partnership with British Cycling to provide free guided bike rides throughout the summer through the Sky Ride Local programme. With various levels available, these rides allow people of all ages and abilities to explore Bournemouth on two wheels. Bournemouth Borough Council will make a further announcement when the pilot scheme is due to start.
