Bridport area Neighbourhood Plan gets underway

Local councils in the Bridport area are working together on a Bridport area Neighbourhood Plan.

The plan will give residents more control over their area when plans for new homes, shops, offices and facilities in their town or village are considered.

The community will decide what is in the plan and when adopted it will be a statutory document that will influence future planning in the area.

West Dorset District Council formally designated the plan area in May 2014 and local town and parish councils are now working together to discuss the initial arrangements.

The plan will cover Bridport, Symondsbury, Allington, Bothenhampton, Walditch and Bradpole.

The councils will appoint a project manager shortly, who will co-ordinate a public consultation and establish a Steering Group, comprised of community volunteers that will work up the plan.

More information on how people can get involved and details of the public launch event will be issued in September.

Cllr Sarah Williams, Leader of Bridport Town Council, said: “It is really good to be working with the other local councils on this exciting and important project for the area.

“Whilst the councils will oversee the production of the plan, this process will be led by the community. I hope that people will take part in the many consultation events that will be held and also come forward to participate in the Steering Group and working groups.

“This is a great opportunity for all of us who live and work in the area to decide how we want the area to develop.”

Cllr Phil Lathey, Chairman of Allington Parish Council, said: “We welcome the opportunity to be involved in this project, shaping the area for future generations.”

Christopher Dobbs, Bothenhampton & Walditch Parish Clerk, said: “There is already enthusiasm being expressed by members of the Bothenhampton and Walditch community, in having active involvement in the Bridport area Neighbourhood Plan.”

Cllr Neil Chilcott, Chairman Bradpole Parish Council, said: “Bradpole Parish Council welcomes the opportunity to be involved in the Bridport area Neighbourhood Plan and would encourage Bradpole residents who may like to be involved in being a member of the steering group or working groups to contact either Sandy Goldsmith, Bradpole Parish Clerk or Bob Gillis, Bridport Town Clerk. This is a good opportunity for residents to have their say in how Bradpole parish develops in the future.”

Cllr Amanda Streatfeild, from Symondsbury Parish Council, said: “What a great opportunity to shape the future of our community.  We are very keen to get our parish involved in the Neighbourhood Plan which we see as a real chance to make our area more dynamic than ever.”

Cllr Robert Gould, Leader of West Dorset District Council, said: “A Neighbourhood Plan is a great opportunity for communities to have more say in the future of their area.

“I encourage residents across Bridport and surrounding areas to get involved and help shape their community through the development of the plan.”
